Talk of the demise of the Sundance Film Festival as an incubator for audience-friendly independent films appears to have been greatly exaggerated. The festival was no longer featuring independent films that could go on to be commercially viable, the thinking went. As has been the case in recent years, streaming services made the flashiest deals. Netflix paid a reported $17 million for the horror film “It’s What’s Inside” and Amazon/MGM bought “My Old Ass,” starring Aubrey Plaza, for $15 million. “Skywalkers: A Love Story,” a documentary about a Russian couple who save their marriage by scaling skyscrapers, was acquired by Netflix, while Warner Bros.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck remember the feeling of being the new kids at the Sundance Film Festival. “I remember being like, oh my God, this festival has been around 20 years, it’s such an old festival,” Boden said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. Their new film debuts Thursday, opening night of the 40th edition of the festival, at the storied Eccles Theater. “My favorite films are Sundance films,” Kaphar said. “That is really nourishing in a year when we’re acknowledging and marking this 40th edition of Sundance.”The Sundance Film Festival runs from Jan. 18 through Jan. 28.

Kevin Conroy, the iconic voice of Batman, died Thursday shortly after being diagnosed with cancer, according to his representatives. Conroy’s deep and raspy voice shot him to stardom as the title character in "Batman: The Animated Series," which ran from 1992 to 1996, according to a statement provided by his spokesperson. He became the quintessential voice of the superhero in almost 60 different productions and video games, including 15 films, highlighted by "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm." He studied at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City alongside heralded actors like Christopher Reeve and Robin Williams. Conroy also had guest roles on popular TV series such as “Cheers,” “Murphy Brown” and “Matlock.”Conroy is survived by his husband Vaughn C. Williams, sister Trisha Conroy, and brother Tom Conroy.
